TAPA ~ Transform a Person Africa

children-outWho is TAPA

Transform A Person Africa is a non profit making charitable organization, based in the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya. By sponsoring a child in TAPA, you can help to care for and educate a child who would otherwise be without school and perhaps headed for a life on the streets without food or job.

The purpose and activities of TAPA

The purpose of TAPA is to transform peoples lives by providing hope and opportunities for a better livelihood. TAPA is involved in 3 main activities to bring hope and opportunity to those who are disadvantaged.

A. TAPA provides education to children who would otherwise be unable to attend school. These children come from the Kibera slum. TAPA has begun with the youngest children and how has 3 pre-school classes. Currently, they care for 70 children. By adding one class each year, they hope to grow the school along with the children.

B. TAPA helps to improve the health of the children and their care givers (many of whom are HIV/AIDS sufferers.) They hold a weekly program for parents and caregivers to provide training and skills development. A savings program has been started with these parents from which funds can be borrowed to help the parent to start or improve their own small business.

C. TAPA also provides vocational skills to youth affected by HIV/AIDS to help them start income generating activities to support themselves and their siblings. TAPA has begun some small businesses to also help provide the income needed to run the TAPA school. Currently they make and sell greeting cards, and they make and sell school uniforms and sweaters.

tapa-knitting-machine-2How you can help

Sponsor a TAPA child. For a monthly donation of €20, you can help to provide for the education and health needs of a TAPA child. There are now 74 children registered in the TAPA school. Only a few of them have sponsors. By sponsoring a TAPA child, you help to provide education and health care for the children. Donations from sponsors are used for: food (mid-morning porridge and school lunch for the children), for books and writing materials, for uniforms (many children do not have adequate clothes for school, if not given a uniform), for basic medical care and for administrative costs and teacher’s salaries.
