NEW OPPORTUNITY: For 20 euro a month you can change a child’s future.
45 new students who had lost any chance to attend school, are now registered in new schools through the efforts of Malaika and their partners in Kenya.
In the parts of Nairobi where Malaika works, the unemployment rate is at least 50%. Every Kenyan child learns at an early age that education is an absolute necessity in such a competitive job market. Without primary, secondary and some post-secondary training, it is almost impossible to find employment.
Through our work in Nairobi slums, we have met many students who want to attend school but who are not able without sponsor help. Some of these are orphans, some partial orphans and some from very poor families.
In Kenya, primary school is said to be free, but a student must also be able to buy a uniform, their school desk, books, school equipment and often lunch. The students we are helping come from families who are unable to afford those needs and so the student is at home, not attending school.
Secondary school requires payment of high school fees, as well as many other costs. So many students are unable to attend secondary school.
Many of the students we are helping were out of school for much of 2010 after they left the Children’s Garden children’s home. Without sponsors, they would have no opportunities to continue with their schooling. These include a young man studying social work in college, 20 high school students and many primary students. Now each of these has been registered in a new school and again have hope for their educational future.
Some of these students have families who they live with, in simple one room slum homes. Others have nowhere safe to live and so are staying in a rescue center while attending school.
Sponsors can sponsor a student in either primary or secondary school. Your donation will go to pay the school costs to enable the student to attend school. We recommend the minimum sponsorship monthly fee of 20 euros per month. This money sent to the Integra Malaika account, will be sent to directly pay these costs for the child.
We have a local coordinator in Kenya who works directly with the schools which the children attend, to ensure that all money is used for the child’s needs. We work very closely with Youth for Hope, Switzerland, who are helping with funding some of the children and provide much on the ground help to arrange schools for each of the children and to monitor the project.
p>As with other sponsorship projects, there will be the opportunity to exchange letters at least 2 or 3 times a year with your sponsored child and to receive annually a new photo of the child. p>If you are interested to sponsor a school student in the Malaika Scholarship Project, please indicate approximate age and gender on the sponsorship sign up form Sponsor now
